
Theoretically it is possible to use an IDE drive if you remove this board. Most machines use a SCSI to IDE adapter board. A larger capacity drive works fine, just format accarding to the manual. Even if you format to 512Mb for the 256Mb software versions it should still work. You can use any old style 50pin SCSI interface drive formatted to 512 or 256 depending on the software. The second requires a timekeeper RAM with a reload of the system ID and date. The first will require, usually, a new HDD with a software reload. These two problems, HDD or timekeeper, have different sources. The error will say something about a BBRAM failure or system ID lost. If the unit is hanging up on the second bar of the 5 segments that progress across the monitor then you are more like to have a problem with the timekeeper RAM. Alister, A HDD failure will be indicated by a error on the monitor, usually something about Drive 0.0. This should get you going again, provided you are sure the HDD is the problem. If you are able to afford the software as well I would ask them for a MO (Magneto Optical) disk of the software. Then ask them for a SCSI HDD for a Logiq 400 with that software. You will need the present software version information for your system. Depending on where you are located they will transfer you to an Asian, European or North American office. In the last pages of the service manual you should see some contact info for various countries or you can look online for the GE Healthcare nearest you. To replace the drive you will need the part number of a preloaded drive and will have to purchase it as a complete unit.

The real issue for you will be that the SCSI HDD from GE uses a unique low level format.
